Cane is woven by hand from rattan, and it is used here for a practical reason as well as a visual one: it breathes. In an Indian summer a fully upholstered back becomes uncomfortable in a way a caned one does not. It is strong in tension and lasts many years, though it is usually the first part of a chair to need attention — and a cane back can be re-woven without touching the frame, which is rather the point.
