What solid wood furniture actually means

Most furniture sold in India at this price is engineered board — plywood, MDF or particle board — with a thin wood-look surface over it. It looks similar in a photograph and behaves nothing alike in a house.

Board swells when it meets water and never recovers. It cannot be sanded, because there is nothing underneath the surface layer to sand back to. When a joint loosens there is no timber to re-cut. That is why so much furniture is thrown away rather than mended — not because nobody wants to repair it, but because it cannot be repaired.

Everything in our catalog is solid timber through its full thickness. A scratch sands out. A joint can be re-cut. A finish can be stripped and redone in twenty years by someone who has never heard of us.

Teak, or sagwan

Teak carries a high natural oil content, which is why it has been used on boats and outdoor furniture for centuries. That oil resists moisture, warping and insect damage without any chemical treatment, and it is why a teak piece stays dimensionally stable through a monsoon and a dry summer alike.

It is the most durable hardwood in common furniture use and priced accordingly. We use it where stability matters most — bed frames, wide storage pieces, and sofa frames that will be re-upholstered long before the timber tires.

Sheesham, or Indian rosewood

Sheesham is dense and strongly figured, running from golden brown to deep chocolate, and it darkens over the first year in a way that is the timber maturing rather than a fault. Its density is what lets a dining table span its length without bowing and a dining chair take daily use without denting.

The grain is pronounced enough that no two tops are alike. That is worth knowing before you order: the piece that arrives will not be identical to the photograph, because no two pieces of sheesham are identical to each other.

Made to order

Much of what we list is built after you order it, which means the size, the finish and the carving are yours to choose rather than ours to guess. A dining table can be built to the length of your room; a mandir to the wall it is going against.

Each product page carries the working days from order to dispatch, full dimensions in centimetres, the materials and finish, and how to look after it. If something is not listed, ask — most of what we make can be adjusted.

Seeing it in person

Furniture is worth sitting on before you buy it. Find a store to see which of our pieces are within reach of you, or send us an enquiry and we will send photographs of the actual item.
